Phishing Site found on BerZkerer - Additional Security Measures Added (Aug, 2007)..

Recently a brute-force password attack allowed someone to access BerZerker and add a website that was being used for phishing EBay logins. This was discovered quickly by my ISP, speakeasy, and I provided them with information that should help find the perpetrator. As a result, additional security measures have been put in place. If you have problems accessing your account, please contact me directly at berzerkerscum at gmail dot come and I should be able to quickly resolve any problems. I apologize for any inconvenience this has caused.

Denial of Service Attack leads to curtailment of services (Jun 13, 2007)..

Unfortunately because a recent DOS attack and other security issues, we will be deleting almost all user accounts from BerZerker. The only accounts that remain active are personal friends that were using berzerker for webspace or email only. No shell access or IRC access will be permitted anymore. If you're account was disabled, please contact me directly at berzerkerscum at gmail dot com to make arrangements for retrieving any files off the site.

New Version of CoreFTP Available! (Feb 7, 2006)..

The latest version of CoreFTP can be found in BerZerker's share folder. CoreFTP is the best free ftp program that also supports Secure FTP (ftp over ssh), which is required when you xfer files to BerZerker. Enjoy.

More security for your files! (Feb 5, 2007)

Because of some quirks with how berzerker was setup in its early days, most users' home directories were readable by anyone with an account on BerZerker. While specific directories and folders could have been protected by you, the default was one of open-access. Needless to say, this isn't preferable and the good news is that it's no longer needed in general. So I have removed global read/traverse access to all home directories. It may be that you have a specific requirement for your home directory to be open -- if so let me know at berzerkerscum at gmail dot com. (i'm getting so much spam at the other addresses they've been rendered unusable!)

Why was BerZerker down for 3 days?
I want a refund!! (Feb 7, 2006)..

We had a pretty bad windstorm in Seattle on Saturday, Feb 4. Even though all of my critical equipment is plugged into an Uninteruptable Power Supply for surge protection, the phone line wasn't. :-( So my best guess is that a power spike through the phone line fried the modem. Anyway, I now have a new modem installed and the phone line is now surge protected.

If you'd like a refund for your free service, just email me. ;-)

WTF? I can't login to update my website! (Sep 8, 2005)..

I'm in the process of moving all accounts to a new server. So that things don't get out of sync, I've disabled account logins in the meantime. But your webpages should still be publicly accessible during this time. SecureFTP access will be turned back on within a day or less. Thanks for your patience.

Dude, Where's my website? (Aug 2005)..

Don't panic. If you can't seem to get to your website for some inexplicable reason, it's because i've restructured the location of user's homepages and something must be messed up with your particular site. I still have you webpages -- the path to get there is just likely screwed up. Most of you shouldn't even be aware of the change. If you are having problems, drop me an email at berzerkerscum gmail dotcom.

Account Deletion/Cleanup (Feb 2005)..

I have begun the process of deleting and cleaning up old accounts that don't appear to be active any longer. Initially, I will delete accounts based on the amount of resources they are taking up. For example, some apparently inactive users have email boxes filled with over 50 megs of spam. It would be helpful if ALL active users drop me an email letting me know that you are still active. If I have deleted your account in error, just let me know and I can restore it. Or if you've there are any other that you need help with. You can email me at scumberzerker.net.

New FTP restrictions (Jan 2005)..

Because standard FTP is very insecure, users are now only able to transfer files to their accounts using Secure FTP over SSH. This method is supported by most FTP programs, but not all. If your ftp client doesn't support this, you can download a free client at the following link, and also read more about the issue: www.berzerker.net/share/". Please email me at scumberzerker.net if you have any problems.

BerZerker Now Hosted by speakeasy.net (Nov 2002)..

As of November 21, 2002, BerZerker's host ISP was changed from oz.net to speakeasy.net. This change was forced because oz.net only had about 100 Covad-IDSL customers and decided that it was no longer profitable for them to continue their relationship with Covad. They arranged for all of their Covad accounts to be transitioned to speakeasy. This has turned out to be a good move for BerZerker. Not only do we have more services available, but the cost is significantly cheaper. Here's a sample of the additional services that speakeasy provides for about $30/month less than we were paying at oz.net:

     - Up to 32 static IP addresses for no additional charge
     - 24/7 technical support
     - A dedicated account manager / tech support person
     - 10 free email accounts
     - Nationwide dialup support
     - hosting of up to 4 domains
     - Backup mail server for the hosted domains

If you are looking for a great ISP that provides nationwide coverage with personalized service and support, please consider speakeasy. If you do wish to use speakeasy, please click on the image below so that BerZerker can receive a referral credit. You must signup from the provided link for us to receive the credit, so go look around first, but come back in from this website when you decide to signup.

User Assistance..

Check this website and the "Message Of The Day" for news and info about berZerker. Critical topics such as BerZerker's Acceptable Use Policy and information about how to connect, are included as separate topics on this page.
Answers to other questions, are most likely found on the Frequently Asked Questions page. The FAQ includes some very basic assistance for users that may not be totally familiar with linux and is a great place to go to find out how to do those things you are allowed to do on BerZerker. I really do try to keep this section informative and up-to-date; not only saving myself time but also ensuring that I have good, thorough answers to user's questions. Please let me know if any part of the FAQ is misleading or inadequate.
Users Mug Shots can be found here, both former EFNet users as well as current users. If yours isn't there, email it to us at durwood at berzerker dot net; otherwise we'll assume your just plain ugly ... ummmm and if that's the correct assumption, just keep yur picture to yourself. ;)

Acceptable Use Policy..

BerZerker is not allowed on EFNet. period. end of discussion. Up to 2 screens are allowed for running IRC clients. No bots/bnc without prior, specific approval and don't even bother asking unless you have a damn good reason. No IRC clones allowed. IRC Server rules MUST BE FOLLOWED ... anyone found abusing their irc "privileges" will be subject to account suspension and possible deletion. Also any abuse of your account in general (spamming, nuking, IP-scanning, etc.) will result in IMMEDIATE account deletion. Please respect this site.

Switching to SSH2..

In order to access berzerker, you will need a client that supports the "ssh2" protocol; the less secure, "telnet" or "ssh1" protocols will no longer be supported. We recommend that you download SecureCRT 3.0 and use it for ALL of your ssh/telnet needs. NOTE: earlier versions do NOT support ssh2 and can't be used to access BerZerker.
